Kathryn Stockett's The Help was a wonderful quick read about Mississippi life (and Southern life in general) in 1962. At the crux of the story sit three women - two black, one white - who come together to blur the racial lines that defined their every action.
The South is a complicated place and this novel points out all the intricacies that make it so. It is clear Stockett has experienced the life she writes for her characters, and I am grateful she has put this out there for all to read. Hopefully other Southerners, like me, will pick it up and see themselves somewhere within the pages.

It took me a lot of time to read it because I was always disturbed (mostly by these stupid mock exams) but I finished it and I really really loved it!

Agora, resta-me ver o filme.

An undeniably captivating read that teaches the extents of ignorance and separation alongside the human need to surge ones own path even in the face of adversity. A testament of strength and courage taken by the three main characters is real- it moves in the lingering time it actually took and still takes people to understand that people are meant to be different; but never tiered over or below one another.

I liked it but I can't help but think it was a little over-hyped. It's really hard to believe that so many people could be so completly hypocritical but I'm also sure that plenty of people still think this way. I wasn't crazy about how it was written in dialect either but I did find it an easy read and towards the end it was a real page-turner. I'm still trying to decide if Minny reall did what she said to the pie or if she just acted like she did.
