As a young man, the Marquess of Bourne loses his fortune and estate in a card game. He discovers that his family's estate has been added to the dowry of his childhood friend, Penelope. He spends the night with Penelope in his empty estate in order to force her father into allowing the marriage to move forward. Penelope wants her sisters to have happy marriages, so she agrees to marry Bourne. Bourne wants revenge from the man who took his fortune, but Penelope is trying to show Bourne that he can be happy without revenge. A good first book for the The Rules of Scoundrels series.

2023 reread: I forgot how much I like this series. This book was smuttier than I remembered.

i enjoyed this!! the second half of this book was really good, but michael was a real asshole at the beginning. and i wanted more of the “childhood friends” aspect. the epilogue was awesome tho.

Sarah MacLean is such a strong writer for the histrom genre and if forced marriage & reforming villains is your cup of tea, you’ll love this. Penelope’s self-doubt was a bit much for me (thought very in character) and it was really engaging to read her story after Leighton’s.

Had problems with the characters. And I couldn't stop seeing the worst in them. (→ Michael / Bourne)
