This kept me guessing, had compelling characters and story. TW for sexual and physical abuse.

Paris wakes up in her bathroom, covered in blood with a razorblade and her famous husband is dead in the bathtub.

She knows shell be charged with murder, but she isn’t worried about this. She is worried about someone figuring out who she really is.

What a great read! I listened to part of this one, and it had me hooked. I binged this book. It had me guessing all over the place. I didn’t find it overly predictable, which made me like it even more.

I cannot wait to read more by this author, and even better- she’s Canadian!

10/10 for JH again! She has a such a great way of relating you to characters. I rooted for Paris the whole time no matter what actually happened!

Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever hated a book character as much as I hate Ruby. She is an absolutely terrible human. Her daughter is incredibly resilient and brave to have survived her.

Excellent thriller. I saw the midway twist coming in advance, and while I wasn’t surprised by the last two, I didn’t exactly see them coming. For me, this was part thriller, part coming-of-age story, and that was a nice blend.

But wow. Ruby? Burn in hell, woman.

This was just ok.
I figured out pretty early on that Paris was Joey, and Mae was the one in the urn.
This is the first book that I’ve read that was based in Canada, so that was cool I guess.
It kept my attention and I wanted to finish it out to the end to see all the tiny details come together.

I do feel that there should be some trigger warnings with this book though. Sexual assault. Child abuse. Sexual abuse on child. And at times it was graphic. Not my cup of tea.

I loved this one. From the very first pages, I started wondering how it was gonna play out and it did not disappoint. Full of great twists and an incredible plot, I could not stop reading. I loved the multiple POVs, the character's history, and the seamless weaving of two different timelines. Paris has so many secrets, someone knows those secrets and wants to let her know. AAAAANNNDDD, while all this is happening, she's been accused of killing her husband. Well done!!!

"Some people wear their hearts on their sleeve. Joey wore her trauma around her neck."

Dang I liked this way more than I thought I would. It also serves as a reminder to give myself a long break in between thrillers because I was thoroughly hooked on this story. I listened to this on audio, so that tends to be hit or miss for me - but this was a hit! Things We Do in the Dark was my first Jennifer Hillier book and definitely not my last.

This story was so entertaining, heartbreaking at times, and very relatable - I really liked the characters, especially Joey. I connected with Joey's story because my husband and his family are Filipino and I appreciate their culture. LOVED the references to Joey cooking chicken adobo and lumpia - my FAVORITES!
