I enjoyed it about as much as the first one, I just found myself longing for more authentic voices from the characters.

A sequel to match, if not better, a wonderful and original story. I am eager to see what Nicole Glover will write next, and what more of this magical world she will show us.

It took me a long time to make it through this one but ultimately it was a good read. The story did have a few slower, more reflective parts than the last story, but I think the issue was me and not the book.

Will read any third or further book that comes out.  Great characters within a fascinating alt-history post Civil War era.  Amazing stuff.

There's nothing wrong with the book. I just couldn't get into it. I listen to audiobooks at work and this moved super faced paced so I found that I was getting confused a missing too much.

Just slightly down from her first book. I don't read these books for the mystery, which isn't handled great for my money. I read these for the world she's created.

The magic systems; the suburb take on putting magic into The Underground Railroad; the Philadelphia she created comes alive; but most importantly, the characters, the family, she's created are simply great. Not everyone gets along and that gives the character arcs and even the plot a dash of realness.

This book introduced brooms to baseball. At least the Negro leagues would hit the ball and then fly up to bases on brooms. I gotta say of all magical tropes this is my least favorite. It wasn't a huge part of the story so it didn't detract.

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I still thought the premise and the world-building was super cool, but I couldn't get into it. I think for me it was that the writing style wasn't engaging for me, and I had trouble remembering what the significance of each character was and how they pertained to the plot.
