I loved The Worst Witch series (and the 90s TV show) when I was around 7 or 8. This series had me running around outside, pretending to do magic and fly on a broomstick. I read this before Harry Potter was popular, and I remain convinced that JKR took a lot of inspiration from this series. There are many similarities, as other reviewers have mentioned, though The Worst Witch was written for a younger audience. I reread this book for the nostalgia, and I believe it still holds up as a series that younger readers will enjoy. I especially love the accompanying illustrations.

Witches at school. I would have eaten this up as a second or third grader and I’m disappointed I never encountered them until now. Perfect for potential Harry Potter fans who aren’t quite ready to tackle that series. This had a pleasantly awkward heroine, flying lessons, potions gone awry, and no evil villains, just your basic strict teachers and irritating classmates. The nasty witches found plotting on the edge of the forest were
Spoiler caught and vanquished in about a second
.

Basically, I really enjoyed this.

I listened to this book on audible, after being a huge fan of the tv show when I was a kid. The Worst Witch #1 deals with the drama that Mildred Hubble causes at Miss Cackle's Academy for young witches. In this story, Mildred can't do anything right whether it be flying or mixing potions. However, when she decides to run away, she uncovers a plot to take over the school and her quick thinking saves the day.

This was a really quick and easy listen, and I really liked the narrator.
