A story of an individual’s life, and also that of Europe, told through multiple voices and perspectives, sometimes on the same page. A story of a violin, a precious object passed down from family to person to person, encountering violence and cruelty along the way. In this respect the book reminds you of Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch, which has at its heart a masterpiece, an object of desire, a MacGuffin. And it remind you, too, of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, which has a single soul crossing eras. Perhaps it’s not the same design, but there are hints and echoes.
But it’s also a story about the persistence of evil in the world, and it is a love story, and it is a story about an enduring friendship. And much else besides. This book, translated from the Catalan, has received some criticism for the sheer number of characters and how the narrative shifts, sometimes mid-sentence, across time and speakers. Yet it’s really not difficult to follow if you pay attention and stick with it. There are some wonderful set pieces: the World War Two scenes stand out, as do the scenes, early in the book, in Rome. A wonderful and complex story of a life well-lived.
