What a thrilling, one-act play - or rather, a tragedy. Though short and perhaps not so sweet, I was completely captivated by Wilde’s words (translated by Lord Alfred Douglas). If only I could read it in French, the original language it was written in. Strangely I’ve never picked up a play except for assigned readings from school, but I guess things are about to change.

Unexpectedly surrealist to me especially with the emphasis on the moon, although decadent by era of creation. The portions actually featuring Salome were sparse and I felt the soldiers and the religious talk didn’t actually add much and felt like filler aside from the prophet himself - otherwise the overall score would be higher. I enjoyed the psychology of it and the ‘plot twist’.

This play straddles the brink between comedy and drama. It's fast paced, very fast paced, which lends it a comic air, but at heart it is a moralistic play detailing the death of John the Baptist (Jonakaan) and Salomé's involvement in it.
Having said that, the drama isn't overly heavy and Wilde's comic genius can still be found in more than just the fast pace of this play. The play is riddled with symbolism, and omens and signs, which all come true, and then at the end he gives Tetarch Herod these lines:
"You must not find symbols in everything you see. It makes life impossible"
My giggles could not be contained.

just people wanting to do things and other people telling them not to, without much success.
great play on the power dynamics of seduction. loved its hysterical tenseness, the repetitions and how dramatic it all was, with great lines such as: 'Jesus raised the dead' - 'yeah, but can he not?'

The dialog made me love this so much. Salome is brat af.
