Beautiful artwork, with an incredibly compelling story. There are some historical innaccuracies, but that's due to archaeological discoveries that have been found since 1938 and no fault of the author's. This is a fanciful story after all and any story with King Arthur involved needs some suspension of disbelief.

This one put me in a reading slump! Would’ve appreciated more historical context to help place me in the time with these comics.

I never read this in the papers when growing up (and certainly am not old enough to have read it from the beginning!) so appreciate these beautiful reprints. The books are large (not heavy, not thick), containing two year's worth of full colour Sunday one pagers. What a treat to have the dimensions large enough to easily apprehend everything.

Other than Val's unfortunate haircut (which he keeps throughout the series), there's a lot of good going on. The panels are beautiful illustrations, rather than what some might think of as cartoons. The setting (which I'd never realised) is England under King Arthur, so there is magic and chivalry and much derring-do. Really a fun read, with gorgeous art.

(Note: 5 stars = amazing, wonderful, 4 = very good book, 3 = decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. I'm fairly good at picking for myself so end up with a lot of 4s). I feel a lot of readers automatically render any book they enjoy 5, but I grade on a curve!

"No one is gayer than this brave and manly prince."

... an unmistakable sign left by the light-hearted Gawain. Val gleefully kills a dude.

He's just so happy to be fighting people and killing monsters. And vice-versa. Also becoming BFFs with someone shortly before deciding that they have to fight to the death.

The most influential adventure strip ever produced, Foster's gorgeous Prince Valiant inspired generations of artists. While the Sunday-only strip has been reprinted several times, this edition contains for the first time images shot from Foster's own color engraver's proofs. Published at the strip's original dimensions and complete with an introduction by Hal Foster biographer [a:Brian M. Kane|28017|Brian M. Kane|http://www.goodreads.com/images/nophoto/nophoto-U-50x66.jpg] and the insightful 1969 Hal Foster interview with Fred Schreiber, the hardcover Prince Valiant Vol. I: 1937-1938 finally presents these lush tales in a format worthy of the material.
