changing my rating to five stars because ALTHOUGH it still feels like a fanfiction it is just so skilfully written that I am stunned. I have never read a book where the main point was to entertain, and which seemed like a fanfiction (the stew???? the entire plot??? the extra content that I thought was totally meaningless and all fun and games until I've read "the masks falling"????) but still remains so exceptionally well written. Samantha Shannon is an absolute master at the good old "showing, not telling" and oh my gosh. maybe because it was a novella and maybe because I reread it within like four day after reading it for the first time (as a comfort after traumatic event of tbs4) (also, this is the first book in the series I've read in English (I usually prefer to read things in the language they originated, however I got all the copies in Polish and im not going to exchange the paperback for ebook, like, ever)) but every sentence just seemed so meaningful (to be fair, I did rather skim through it than read it all again) (was supposed to have a math test a few days later and this served as procrastination method). like, literally. it was just so well thought-through and there is nothing nothing I enjoy more than good character evaluation. it is just such a perfect fit for the series. also all the clues that I missed because they ar just so smart!! would recommend and would read again at some point probably. not now though. now im trying to forget this series exists. see ya in two years

I found the two timelines in this novella strange. I very much enjoyed the one in Paris, bridging the gap between books 3 and 4, but I really didn't see the use of the flashbacks to Oxford.

Despite that, getting to dive deep into Paige's suffering was so hard. Her emotions and new anxieties were so well portrayed. She's gone through so much and I feel for her.

The Paige/Arcturus development I was craving. Seems pretty key to their story, both past and present, so I feel like it would've made sense to add it to the reprint of The Song Rising the way The Pale Dreamer was added to The Bone Season.

The Dawn Chorus is the bridge that gaps Book 3 and Book 4 in the series. This is a much needed novella that should a little bit of the happening and tender moments between Paige and Warden.

This was such a beautiful and tender interlude, the softness of their relationship and reliving Paige’s memories is just what my shattered soul needed after The Song Rising.

This woman can write no wrong. Love love love.
