End very predictable, rest of story not. A story of feeling different, dreaming up a married life, having a husband lie and abandon you; then doing self-destructive things and lying to yourself. Delores learned to care about herself and others through people she let herself love and trust.

A very emotional book written by a stoic creative writing teacher, to insure the language is dead and boring. Everything in this book has been written about better elsewhere.

I just can’t understand how this book can have such simple, almost middle grade writing, yet be so dark, devastating, and deeply symbolic. How did a man write this? How many trigger warnings must this thing have? Will I ever stop thinking of this? Did every phycology major read this before graduation? Is this actually the work of some great philosopher? Damn, this book was wild!! I took my sweet time listening to it and I’m glad I did. It had time to seep in. Going through this tragic story I kept being shocked and thinking “nothing worse can happen”, yet it did! If you love dissecting deeper meanings, holy humpback wale, THIS IS IT!! But even if you don’t love discussing symbolism, the raw truth in this book is profound. But it has ALL THE CONTENT/TRIGGER WARNINGS! It was a tough read in that regard. My heart hurt and my body hurt and my head hurt because I cried… yet, the writing style was so simple I could have easily sat down and read it all the way through. WOW!
*seriously, proceed with caution. This book has some dark stuff

Ohh this book. This book gets me every time. I initially read it my senior year of high school and thought it was awesome.
As I've grown older I've found that it speaks to me on entirely different levels. I re-read it every fall and every time I do I get something new & unique out of it. A true classic, for me. I have a feeling I'll continue to read it for years to come.
Also, I find it so fascinating that Wally Lamb can write so poignantly from a woman's perspective. The man's got a gift!

Oh uh erg...reviewing this one is tough. This is one of those books..a bit like A Prayer for Owen Meany..that I didn't totally enjoy, but I know will stick with me. And maybe it's because the book is long so you're stuck in their world for a while, but I think it's more about strong characters that are unforgettable. Characters that you don't totally love, but you still want to know what happens to them. The book is a pretty easy read, but the one issue I had was around the fact that everything seemed to be sexual in some way. And I get it, an early experience with the character causes this... But after a while, I just kept thinking how much Freud would have loved this book. Maybe he would have given it five stars..oh well. I'll only give it three and a recommendation to read it if if you liked Owen Meany.

Dolores Price doesn't have an easy life. Her mother has a breakdown, her father leaves them, and she's forced to live with her repressive grandmother. Raped at 13, she eats her way into oblivion--250 pounds worth. Her mother is killed in a freak accident, college is a nightmare, she has her own breakdown and a disastrous marriage. But eventually she finds herself and happiness--with a man she drew on an Etch-a-Sketch for a psychic many years before.

I loved this book. I know there are a great many of you who hated it but there it is. I don't expect a book to be uplifting until it hurts from the happy I don't expect a book to be perfect. Perhaps these are some of the best reasons I loved this book. I WAS and AM the fat girl with the messed up life where everything goes crazy simply because that's life. So a book like this was rather nice, it moved me because I understood many of the thoughts Delores had over the course of the book and it was refreshing to find a book that didn't try to lay out just enough happy and just enough sad to make it fit the lit gold standard and I might add boring as old book dust mold drama seems to get forced into.

This is a pretty tragic story of Delores who is a struggling result of her dysfunctional family. It's entertaining enough and well written, but very sad.
