listening to the audiobook with the amazing work of nicola coughlan made this book even better, she gave so much life to the characters (who were already great, so different from each other and recognizable)
the story was amazing, i love how we get all the pov's, so we also "understand" the antagonist and why they did what they did. it really felt like a slice of life, chill story of a witch trying to understand who she is, meet new friends, etc and then on the other side it was "IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD IF I DON'T DO ANYTHING". i loved the contrast
also the fact that there's kids who learn about their powers ?? teenagers becoming friends and the adults looking out for them idk it really felt like a family, an upgrade on the found family the adults already had. it was so cute

I enjoyed the themes, like the politics and dynamics at play among the covens and witchy parts of society, but the plot really didn't wow me. It was a little boring.

The book has LGBTQ and BIPOC rep but I would have liked for Theo to play a bigger, more active part in the story.

I listened to the audiobook and Aiofe McMahon is a favorite narrator so that helped get me through the book when the story dragged.

I really wish I liked the book better.  Unfortunately the villain of the story was so realistic and believable I found myself upset and pissed for most of the story. On top of that, for a book all about sisterhood and feminism, for 2 of the main characters to be so meh about letting one of their "sisters" be treated like absolute garbage because they don't want to upset her? Where was the outrage?

Lastly, that ending was just utter crap. I do want to read the 2nd book and HOPEFULLY the character development in book 2 will turn the series around (or at least be present).

On one hand, I feel like the main message of this book is important and I'm glad its been so successful. But I bounced off of the extremely causal prose hard, and it was difficult to read so much misogyny directed at women by other women (please stop calling each other cunts holy shit!)

(I am also very tired of books that go "covid happened but we used magic to make it go away" ugh! And blaming the anti-vax movement on warlocks is so distasteful.)
