A fun book to read to kids; creative tales about the origin of animals.

Cute. Undercut a bit by the casual racism and colonialism that marked so many British writers of the time, but I appreciated Kipling's interest in the natural world. His poetry is also very well-constructed, and I enjoyed it more than the rest of the book.

This edition had some beautiful illustrations. My favorite story was about how the armadillo came to be because it was so funny.

This book will always have a special place in my heart, not necessarily because of it's content--I think I enjoyed Aesop's Fables more--but rather because of the circumstances in which I came to own my copy. It was given to me by my third grade teacher as a reward for a job well done on some assignment long forgotten, but he inscribed it with "Tara, you have a lovely way with words." I've never forgotten that compliment and will always think of it in connection with this book.

I couldn't finish this book. The short stories started off mildly interesting, and the narrator's voice was really original. But after reading 10 stories of illogical and lengthy "explanations" for how the world works, I just got bored.
