I read a lot of trash, and although I have absolutely no shame about my romance habit, I recognize most of it for the silliness it is.

But this book was absolutely delightful. Sometimes you strike gold with a romance writer with true talent, and I like this one a lot.

I loved this book so much! The characters were believable and the heroine, Jane, was the most relatable romance novel character I’ve ever come across. She was wonderfully normal. I loved her from the beginning. Elisa Braden has a talent for creating characters that are easy to love and care about and that makes some of the pointless plot points absolutely forgivable.

This was nice!

Harrison isn't the kind of hero I usually go for, but I gotta admit, his whole honorable-man thing really did it for me! And he could be super hot when he needed to be. Were his issues stupid and could've been with Jane from the start? Yes, but whatever.

And Jane... Yeah, I like her. She isn't the best heroine I've ever read about, but she's sweet enough.

Now, the whole "oh she is so plain, he could never be really interested in her" shenanigan was boring. I was bored. So... Good book, 3 stars.

Also, the Colin chapters... Why? Seriously, like, dude, wait for your own book.

I am really beginning to enjoy this author's books. I started with book 4 in this series then had someone recommend book 2. Now, I wish I had started with book 1 given the spoilers....so do this series in order! So far, these have been very entertaining. Colin's story is next and I think that could be interesting! Lots of spice, lots of angst!

What I liked:
  • Harrison’s obsession, I love how down bad he was for her! It was so cute. It definitely took a while to get to that side of him, but once we got there, he was adorable. I wish we knew how he felt about her beforehand though. There are hints that he felt protective toward her before the events of this book too.
  • Jane’s acceptance of herself, it was really beautiful to see her become comfortable with herself and be more confident.
What I didn’t like:
  • Over complicated, things between the couple felt drawn out and over complicated for no real reason? It was frustrating to watch and made the second half of the book feel like it was dragging.

This book was much better than the first one. It wasn't fantastic but it was still oaky. My problem with this book was mainly with Jane. I loved her at first.. she kind of went downhill for me towards the end. She was so strong and then I felt like she was begging for his attention. It obviously all worked out for her in the end but I just don't like desperation in my heroines.

I keep finding new to me historicals with a marriage of convenience plot and I’m not mad about it. This is my first Elisa Braden novel. It was recommended on TikTok and I decided to give it a shot. I am so glad I did because I’m obsessed.

Harrison, the Duke of Blackmore, is trying to clean up his younger brothers mess by marrying Lady Jane, the girl his brother almost ruined. What ensues is a Duke afraid of loving someone and a Duchess convinced no one could love a plain wallflower.

This whole scenario is one of my favorite set ups in historical romances. Looking at you Devil In Winter, aka my favorite HisRo of all time. Harrison is afraid to love his wife, but his feelings for her are so evident from almost the beginning of their marriage. His urge to protect her from his “passions”is so damn funny. Like my guy. She wants you to ravish her. Quit being noble, dummy. I LOVED that Jane takes the initiative to seduce her husband and make him lose his restraint with her.

This has one of my favorite scenes/ quotes in a historical ever. When Jane is intent on leaving and Harrison begs her to stay and calls her “my Jane”???? Oh god. Swoon city.

I’m so glad this came across my TikTok FYP and that I took a jump and read it. I love Elisa Braden and can’t wait to read the rest of the series. Especially Chatham and Charlotte’s book and Lord Dunston and Maureen’s.

Harrison wasn't anywhere as interesting as Chatham. Honestly, he was an honorable man but Jane deserved more.
