It was really difficult to root for this couple. Allison is often frustratingly immature and her insecurities manifest as over competitiveness (to the point of lying about her abilities). She and Colin bring out the worst in each other, and the reasons she broke up with him in the first place should have been more than enough to NOT give him a second chance. A major point relies on miscommunication which I am not a fan of. More drama than romance. Unfortunately I can't recommend this book.

I love the plus size representation as a plus size girly myself, but holy shit, both Allison and Colin were annoying lmao

Thanks to NetGalley for the free book in exchange for an honest review!

The Make-Up Test was an interesting read for me. It was one of the few books I’ve read lately with a fat main character and it was refreshing! Overall, it was a fun read. Let’s get into some things I liked about the book and some things I didn’t like!

Pros:
-The main character was an absolute baddie who wasn’t afraid to fight back! I absolutely loved the fact that she was comfortable in her own skin and that the book wasn’t about her accepting herself or losing weight.
-As a fat girl myself, this book made me feel seen. I adore any media when it shows normal people who aren’t supermodels having romance.
-I liked how passionate the characters were about the stuff they loved. They felt relatively fleshed out.
-I loved the literature moments and debates even if I had no clue what was going on
-The book had some funny moments I chuckled at

Cons:
-The rivalry between Allison and Colin is borderline toxic in some parts
-Some random things pop up out of nowhere to move the story along. For example, the research trip with only one spot. Seriously, how many times can there be ‘only one spot so we have to fight each other to the death for it!?’ A lot of problems came up and the ending felt quite rushed and incomplete.
-Circling back to the borderline toxic rivalry, Colin was often a plain jerk. He does some really crappy things but ‘please forgive him because he actually has a really, really, really fantastic reason to do horrible things but he can’t explain it for reasons,’

The Make-Up Test was a solid 3 stars or perhaps 3.5 stars if I’m feeling generous. It had quite a few elements I like in a book but some parts didn’t sit right with me. I had fun reading and if you are considering reading it you should give it a try!

This is the first book that I've read where the main character is not a slim, Victorias Secret model body type. I love that about this book, and feeling included. I didn't like however, how the parents in the book made it seem like Allison (the main character) was so horrible for being plus size. The comments made.. it was so hard for me to imagine a parent being so volatile against their own child. This also was written in narrative POV, which isn't my favorite. At some points, I found myself reading for dialogue and not context. This was an enemies to lovers romance, and a second chance romance. I can appreciate that the plot of the book was more than just the romance- there is an actual story behind it. I enjoyed reading it, and seeing the slow burn tension of former lovers turned "enemies" find their way back to one another. I'm so relieved that this wasn't some "jock falls in love with the lonely plus sized girl" trope, it was just two smart, average people who find their ways to one another.

I should've listened to the GR score, but read this for a challenge. I liked Allison's positive attitude towards her size, but Colin was straight-out awful.

Idk because this boy is down bad and he makes up for this but let me tell you when a man you're dating does something to fuck with and undermine your girl's career aspirations (this is the second time THIS WEEK where this trope has snuck on me) I have a hard time getting over the ick. But I love academia, tbt to my lit major days, and like people grow I guess.
