There was certainly a lot of honesty and beautiful language in this book, but the inner monologue/dialogue was just too droning and repetitive to me. Rumination is important to the story, but the style of it in this book came across as tiresome and overwrought. I found myself skimming over so much of Maria's stream of consciousness, that I wonder if this novel wouldn't benefit from some whittling down to novella length.

The characters weren't unlikeable per say, but I also didn't feel any affinity for any of them. By the time the curtain was pulled back for the big reveal, I didn't even care what the truth of the story was any more.

The thing I most liked about the book is the idea of attenuation, and yet it was only briefly worked in. Overall a disappointment considering all of the hype and acclaim surrounding this book.

The book says many of the things we won't admit to thinking. It pulls them and weaves them into a tapestry of wonderfully horrible, beautiful ramblings. The plot underneath is completely unnecessary to make this book amazing, but it, too, is very interesting and laid out in such a way that I kept wanting more. I was worried at first when I saw paragraphs that spanned over many pages or entire chapters, but now I am in love with this writing style. It pushed me to stay on the book's train of thought instead of giving me time to breathe and notice myself, my own thoughts. I was completely absorbed into this world and it's exceptionally well-fleshed-out characters. This might be my new favorite book.
