This was a very heartbreaking book. Lots of feels that I could relate to. It’s a shame that it’s so short, but the art was clear and the translation read well.

Ikeda we're gonna have words WHY THAT ENDING
(As usual, I love her art and melodrama and the queerness in her stories. I just wish the ending was different in some way, or that it was a 2-volume oneshot rather than one. Oh well!)

I was pretty critical of this at first- the drama was unending, there were some abrupt and unexpected "reveals," Claudine's gender is insinuated to be a result of seeing her father's affair with a young man, and I just feel like too much lit with trans characters is sad. (Which this is.) But now that I realize it was published in the 1970s, I'm actually kind of impressed. The main character's gender/sexuality isn't really held against him(?)- he's beloved by all throughout. So, I'm giving it some credit for being ahead of its time, and for the lovely art. Probably an important one to be aware of in the context of historical LGBTQIA lit, manga specifically; but not necessarily one I'd read or recommend for fun.

slightly better than couple of the white room thanks to its more grounded qualities.
once again, a tragic ending that, even if disappointing, could be expected considering the time period of both the story and the writer.

I like that Claudine was still able to know that at least two persons in this world knew who he truly was and loved him for it. cheaters deserve hell no matter the sexuality btw. fuck his dad.
