I like the mix of Spanish words and phrases, though I’m not sure how much non-Spanish speakers might be able to understand some of them.
It starts sad, but then it gets really intense. It has some supernatural elements, but for the most part it's gritty and realistic, in a gory and violent way.
Overall, it was a great book.

DNF’d which is rare for me. I’ve read two really bad books from BOM that I managed to suffer through but this one has compounded issues. The language jumps are a good idea on paper but hard to read. The violence and over the top and graphic substance and child abuse was where I officially called it.

Extremely predictable. The characters were all awful and hypocritical. A significant portion of dialog is in Spanish, for no reason. A sentence might start in English and end in Spanish, and it’s not general Spanish most people know, you have to be an advanced speaker to understand. The author tried so hard to write a thriller that just failed.  An EXCESSIVE amount of time spent on child abuse that was absolutely not needed at all. The vocabulary and character development felt like a high schooler wrote the book, you lose track how many things are “dilapidated”.  Half of one page was “Not enough money for rent. not enough money for car insurance.” And the like. I will be throwing this book away because it has no home on any shelf.

I really wanted to like this one but I think it just isn't for me. It left me feeling kind of sad and gross whenever I would listen to the audiobook, and not in a good way.

I've heard it compared to This Thing Between Us, and I can see the similarities in how it explores grief, but it didn't have that same feeling of cosmic horror.

I do appreciate the themes of this book and the writing. I just don't particularly like the heavy feeling of it. I may go back to this at some other point in time.

This book hits like a punch in the gut. It was absolutely riddled with death, grief, religion, violence, and vengeance. Extremely gripping right from the beginning, I devoured this book whole. There are very disturbing parts in the book, so it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Such a great read, and this book definitely started the new year off with a bang (pun intended).

This book just wasn’t for me. I was really interested in the mysticism, but it was just a bit too dark, gritty, and gory for my personal taste. Some scenes are very graphic (violent) and hard to read, and I don’t consider myself to have a weak stomach. Overall, the book was pretty depressing. I think the writing was great, and the story had a unique premise, but the tone was a bit too rough for me

This book went in a direction I did not expect at all. Definitely violent but the story kept me hooked. I do with the translations we’re in foot notes as opposed to a separate book. Would be easier to read.
