Always adored the work of Sappho.

Sappho’s writings are so atmospheric and pretty I really felt I was transported to another era while reading the few poems I could understand. It made me sad to realize that we have so few of her works. I was disappointed by how much of this was just random loose words. But I still liked this!

My first encounter with Sappho and it won't be my last. Absolutely exquisite. Just makes me yearn for more.

Its a good read and if you know how to read ancien Greek then I liked that the original tekst was right next to the translated version. Sapphos greek can be difficult to translate so its not something i would do in my spare time, but i liked that i could translate the smaller fragment by my self.
It is important to remember that almost all of the poems are in fragment. So if thats gonna make you crazy the you probably shouldn't read Sappho.
This is also a quick read, even though it has over 300 pages, the poetry dose take up most but there is also a commentary section to clear op confusion with the tekst or a name that shows up you dont know.

I myself am studying ancient history at my University so Sappho was a poet that I had heard of before buying the book, but you don't have to know background story about Sappho to reach her poetry, it is perfectly enjoyable without that information.
Allot the fragments are very small and sometimes there is a lot missing from the poem but I still love it. It opens up the doors for your own creativity, no you have to fill about the spaces that time has destroyed in the poetry.
I personally enjoyed to read the part out loud and not stop whenever there was a missing sentence or word, I like to make the poem blend together even though I know it's not the original or what Sappho originally wanted to write, but it can create some new meaningless to the works lost throughout time.

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy ancient history and poetry mix together. It could be a great way to open the world of ancient poets because there are some great ones are there
