This was a good first book in a series in terms of setting us up in this world. We got hints of future characters, places, and plot devices for the rest of the series, but as a standalone, this was a little boring. There wasn't a ton of plot, and the most action that happened was a fade to black moment.

The relationship was very insta-love, but sweet. It was a grumpy sunshine type of relationship. Danny was the cinnamon roll, while Wyn was this ancient evil. I liked that Wyn was awkward and that they were both new to romance/relationships.

This definitely is monster smut. Wyn is humanoid, but not human. They don't just have wings or horns or tail. Their body is different, so the smut is a little different.

From what i've heard, this series just gets better and better as it goes, so I'm excited to continue to dive into this.

This book is like the perfect mix of Things Clare Likes: dystopian hellscape, road-trip, absolutely swoony love story, scorching hot spice, quirky idiots doing Real Stuff™️, HIGH STAKES outside the relationship, grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, hurt/comfort, realistic and emotionally charged conflict…ugh so good.

Dystopian monster romance? Yes this genre exists. I know, I was surprised too. The thing I enjoyed the most about Wyn and Danny’s story was that even though it was outrageous and totally fantastical, the situation they were in together allowed their relationship to develop slowly and realistically. I mean, there’s “forced proximity” and then there’s “a mass-murdering monster* saved me from the military and now we are on the run together through a deserted United States crawling with raiders, monsters and other dangers.” Like I said: STAKES ARE HIGH.

*there’s more than meets the eye here, but I’ll let you read it to find out.

👍🏻RECOMMENDED. Check the CW - this is a romance but there are a lot of horror elements in it that were familiar to me as a plague novel/dystopian horror enthusiast that might be hard to take if you’re not expecting them.

OK, I have found my new obsession and boy is it a hot one. This is everything I never knew I needed in my life - M/M monster dystopian romance!

I was surprised to see this was the author's first novel because it's such a strong debut! Sure it's a little rough around the edges, but the setting and character's she's created here are a great foundation. And it was such a rollercoaster! I felt joy, pain, fear, anxiety, heartbreak....but ultimately it's just such a sweet romance.

The two leads, Danny (the lovable, kinda dumb human) and Wyn (the Soul Eater) have such lovely interactions. It's told entirely from Danny's POV, though I kinda wish there were some POVs written from Wyn's perspective because he is very much the strong, silent type. But watching him slowly start to relax around Danny was amazing and their sexy times...holy hotness. I haven't been exposed to much in the ways of alternate anatomy, but boy did I enjoy this and all the variations they got up to!

Really looking forward to see where the series goes!
