Like WOW. I have seen so many people talk about this series and I had just never gotten around to starting it. Well here I fucking am, late to the party, but so happy to be here.
I can't believe this was a debut?? The world is so impressively fleshed out. Very post-apocalyptic/dystopian vibes. Very unique monster lore. The sweetest fucking characters. Despite the setting and plot, it was just so warm and tender?? Until we got to the 75% mark and then Lily Mayne decided to send me on an emotional SPIRAL because what the fuck?? (I loved it though.)
*My only complaint is in the form of questions regarding one of the major incidents that happen in the last quarter of the book. I would have liked more explanation on page rather than getting the events secondhand.
Obviously I'm going to be reading Edin next because that giant purple teddy bear is my new favorite.

The dystopian setting that this book was set in was a setting i ate up the more i read it! I loved to see that a threat other then the typical zombie actually ended the world. The lore of the monsters, how they each looked different, their abilities, and why the more humanoid ones were here in the first place was very fascinating to learn. How some of the building were delapated and run down showing a picture of how the world used to be before.
The romance between Danny and Wren was filled with such great chemistry and sexual tension. Those scenes were spicy as well yet very well written. The descriptions of how these two thought of each other were amazing. I liked how they learned more about each other as the book went on eventually forming a bond that was beautiful.
I definitely want to read more of this series and more books from Lily Mayne in general! I can't wait to read this story from Wren's perspective, I'm dying to know how he thought about all this.

Danny and Wyn are an unlikely pairing, but they are made for each other. Danny is a man who didn't have anything in life and joined the military to fit in somewhere, so when the Soul Eater doesn't kill him, everything changes for him. Danny is sassy and slowly realises that he and Wyn may be attracted.
Wyn is so sweet, if not a little intimidating and scary initially. The journey they embark on and the things they encounter bring them together. The spice is stunning and very well done, and meeting Edin was fabulous; he remembers me as a big rugby player who is a teddy bear on the inside.
This was the first time I read Lily Mayne, and I will be reading the rest of this series and her other books.

I never really read a monster romance before reading this that wasn't in a "PNR Shifter" category, except for a series with aliens. This tale of a post apocalypse world over run by "monsters" was an exciting mix of reality, fantasy, action, horror, romance, and comedy. It's a fairly lighthearted feeling book but the setting is less than light. It is told in Danny's POV but the way that Wyn is portrayed is sympathetic to his character. He is thought to be a horrible monser, killing for the sake of killing, but he is so much more. Danny slowly discovers that Wyn has a heart.
While this book is mostly lighthearted there are some difficult things that the characters go through. there are parts that are humorous and fun and parts that are heartbreaking. The narration for Danny through these parts is great, but the way that Wyn is portrayed is incredible. I rewind just to relisten to parts with Wyn's voice.
