4.5 stars. I was looking for a book set in Thailand to get ready for an upcoming trip there. I stumbled across this collection of short stories and I’m so glad I did! Every story was well-written, emotionally powerful, and gave glimpses of different slices of life in Thailand.

I chose this book to read as my Thailand book for my reading around the world tour. While in Bangkok I was searching for Time by Chart Korbjitti, I wasn’t able to find it, but chose this nice one instead which I found at the Kinokuniya book store in the Siam Paragon Mall. I enjoyed reading the short stories that make up this book. I feel each story gave me a sense of important historical events and daily life experiences that partly shape Bangkok and overall Thai culture. I finished this book while on the second leg of the slow boat journey along the Mekong River from Pak Beng to Luang Prabang, Laos.

Set in contemporary Thailand, this brilliant collection of short stories and one novella is the debut novel of Rattawut’s. Themes such as family bonds, cultural erosion and generational conficts highlight these funny and poignant stories. The writing has a gift for detail and bristles with imagination.
