This book, more than the last, I feel had too many plot lines happening simultaneously. I wish that the plot had been more focused, though I did like learning more about the fae.
There was a short section in this book that called a part-Chinese character “inscrutable” and attributed this to his being Chinese. It was disappointing and upsetting when I had previously enjoyed that this series seemed much more like the work of a feminist. I hope that this section was well-meaning but ignorant, especially since the author is usually respectful and has taken care to have diverse and not tokenized characters. I don’t know how to feel about this part of the book.
Spoiler
I also really loved Samuel’s storyline in this book, but I wish that what ‘saved’ him was not a woman. I think it feeds too much into patriarchal ideas of women ‘fixing’ men. I continue to really appreciate the accurate portrayals of trauma and its lasting effects. There was a short section in this book that called a part-Chinese character “inscrutable” and attributed this to his being Chinese.
