Beartown covers some heavy topics with incredibly well written and thought provoking prose. I loved how well Fredrik captured the diverse thoughts, feelings and conflicting emotions of the citizens of Beartown - multiple povs can sometimes get confusing but in this case it painted a complex and beautiful image of a small town and how everyone sees and experiences events differently. I'll definitely be continuing the series.

You don't need to say words to the effect of "but nothing would ever be the same after the terrible event that is about to happen" at the end of every paragraph to build suspense.
I also would never have picked up the book if I had known the entire plot centres around a girl being raped. I'm tired of men writing about assaulting women.

I really enjoyed this book. Some of the themes were dark; however, the author handles the points of view very well. The reactions of the characters were layered and realistic. Each of the point of views felt necessary to build the view of the town as a whole. The themes of family, friendship, sport fanatics, what it means to be a team were all captured well. There were times I thought a scene was going one way but it went another, which I appreciated - made the story not feel predictable and flat

Wow, this book was incredible. Such beautiful writing. He has an incredible way of capturing the truth of humanity. I loved this story. I loved the story and the structure, it feels like an ensemble instead of one main character.

This book was so devastating and heartbreaking, and yet I couldn’t put it down. I could not stop thinking about this book, and after finishing it I still can’t, as I am constantly reminded that its contents aren’t only fictional.

Overall a really good story, easy to read and understand while still tackling big issues, and maintaining a sense of hope throughout.

Not a fun or easy read, as one would expect based on the subject matter. But a very compelling look into community culture and ripple effects - the effects of pervasive silence and what we allow/encourage because of it, the effects of one person speaking a harsh truth.

This was a deeply hard read. Backman is a gripping writer, with chapters that move so quickly and visually that they feel like movie scenes. His mastery of the complex, fallible character is also truly striking.
I can’t say I really truly enjoyed this one though. The plot was so gut destroying I was often nauseated. The tragedies of it hit close to home in a way that was deeply uncomfortable for me. And while the ending felt peaceful compared to the bulk of the text, I still came out of it feeling deeply sickened by humanity.
His writing style and plot development also feels a little less complex than I usually go for in a novel.
