This book is a heartbreaking tale of Syria refugees and their travels to the UK. The story shows how PTSD affects everyone differently, but tells the extremely sad but hopeful tale of Nuri and Afra and the extremely difficult and long journey they had to take to escape their war stricken, brutal and dangerous country and find safety.

This novel is truly beautiful and it harnesses that beauty, taking the reader to some of the darkest depths to suffocate them within its pages. The trail for a refugee is rough, tortuous even, and yet no matter how hard the road gets, the characters find some sort of hope to cling on to. Sure, not one of these characters has power, nor even are a hero, but they are so human, so hopeful, that it is impossible for me not to love them more than any hero.

5/5: some of the best characterization, the best portrayal of grief I've ever read, and an impactful story that will make you feel...not great.

First of all, I have to say that the writing style was incredible. I mean, genuinely, jaw breaking-ly incredible. The poetic sentences were a bit much and too frequent at times, but they invoked such heavy emotions. It was a heartbreaking read covering very realistic experiences that Syrian refugees face in the wake of losing their everyday livelihoods. This book will leave you utterly devastated and depressed. I was sobbing.
What hurt me (and all readers, i’m sure) the most was that I figured Mohammed was a figment of Nuri’s imagination and that Afra’s blindness was a psychosomatic PTSD response. Waiting for the words to reveal the truth was like ripping a band-aid off of a festering wound. You can already tell it’s festering, but you don’t want to see it. Just fucking devastating. I am waiting for a friend to read this so that we can discuss.

This book is just so sorrowful and harrowing. It tells the story of Afra and Nuri and how they are forced to flee their home. In contrast to other stories about refugees, this one focuses on the mental trauma that many  refugees and asylum seekers have to deal with (which is often forgotten). The author has such a beautiful writing style.
I hope more people read this book.
We HAVE to create Safe Refuge Routes to Europe.
