My town is big enough for two independent bookstores and one chain bookstore, but not big enough to have regular author events. So I was very surprised to be in the chain store one day (for my daughters school fundraiser) and see an author table. I walked over to check it out, met the author, and learned about his book.

Patrick Harris is local, living and writing in Reno. He writes young adult fantasy novels. I read literary and historical fiction plus some memoir. But I wanted to support him so I bought the book. To my delight he signed it. As an amateur writer with several dormant novels drafts, I know how hard writing novels is and applaud anyone who gets published (let alone has a table at Barnes and Noble). I came home and procrastinated, shelving the book, and continuing to read in my comfort zone.

Enter Modern Mrs Darcy 2020 reading challenge with a prompt to read a book by a local author. Still I procrastinated and finally picked it up on the last day of the year. Thankfully it is a great book! And easy to read as I read it most of the day and finished just before 2020 ended. The cold snowy day outside and warm cozy atmosphere inside contributed to a wonderful experience.

The story is about four brave friends who adventure together, accept challenges, and grow in beautiful ways. It is a story full of fairy tale characters and internal and external monsters. Themes of hope and healing made this the perfect story to end the year with.

Harris has a creative mind and crafts great plot and strong sentences. I am no YA or fantasy expert, but I will share this title with my middle schooler and any child or adult who likes adventure stories and stories of hope. Harris is a kind and generous man. Here is his note to us in the inside cover.

To Sophia and Karla,
Whether by book or bus, pursue every adventure!
Patrick Harris

From his pen to our hearts may we all continue to pursue adventure and tell stories.
