I enjoyed the book and this series. The only bad thing that I will say about this novel is that it has a definite window for book three. Everything is built up, and while the main throughline is completed, every other thread is still dangling almost forcing the reader to continue to book three. But, I love this series and my nine-year-old loves it, so onto book three we go.

O calloo! callay! Enjoyed. Though that makes very little by way of review, it encapsulates my affection and response to a t.

A terrific follow-up to the first one, and surprisingly epic in scope for something I initially saw as a Diana Wynne Jones-ish fun kid's fantasy. And rather than three separate stories, it's clear that each volume is part of one long tale--there are satisfying mini-resolutions at the end of each book, but much is left hanging for the subsequent one(s).
I'm assuming you've read the first (if not, read it--it's great!), and the second is just as good, with a deepening of the characterizations and an expanding of the mise-en-scène.
(Note: 5 stars = rare and amazing, 4 = quite good book, 3 = a decent read, 2 = disappointing, 1 = awful, just awful. There are a lot of 4s and 3s in the world!)

Very much a middle book in the series. But I do like the way Blackwood's imagined magic. And the emerging political elements are intriguing.
