Started out in a very promising way; although the horrific setting (from Auschwitz-Birkenau to a Stalinist concentration camp is painful to read about, the comparison of the two can be illuminating. But after a bit the novel's one-dimensionality makes you distrust the author's knowledge of the history and leaves the main characters less than compelling. There are far better and more powerful books out there on this topic--novels, histories, and memoirs. I recommend Into the Whirlwind by Yevgenia Ginzburg, for example.

Horrible history detailed within this novel, based on the true stories of Cilka. The circumstances she has found herself and the things which occurred are shocking, however the overall narrative was a little clumsy and I feel more could have been done to develop the different core characters along the way.

amazing book - did not give 5 stars as the ending was a bit rushed (why was she allowed to leave? how is josie and her daughter? etc)

I loved the Tattooist of Auschwitz so I was excited to read this sequel. I was a little nervous how it would hold up to the first book but I think I actually liked it better. It’s fiction but based on a real person and it left such an impression on me. It’s a very sad topic but was handled beautifully. I love the author’s writing style and the way her stories unfold. She really makes you feel for the characters.
I received an advanced copy from Netgalley.
