Grabbed this book at the library on a whim because of the cover (anime drawings with the hion lines). I recognized Sanderson’s name but had never read any of his books. I was nervous to try this one when I realized there’s an order to reading his works. As this is a stand alone, I took a chance and I’m glad I did. It took a while to get into the story and but I’m glad I stuck it out. Highly recommend. Also, ffx was one of my favorite games growing up so not surprised that I enjoyed this so much.

I loved it. Absolutely loved it. Few books have left me with the satisfaction and feelings that this one did. Everything about it was perfection and I am once again left in awe by Sanderson’s masterful storytelling and world building. I’m obsessed and I plan on buying my own physical copy after reading my borrowed one.
If you go into this without reading other Cosmere novels (specifically the Stormlight Archive) it might make a more challenging read to understand all of the elements that made up the story. I would definitely recommend readers who haven’t read the Stormlight Archive but have read this book to come back and reread after finishing the 4 Stormlight books. Trust me, you will gain a new perspective on the narrator Hoid and his companion/the restaurant owner Design. Many of the eccentric behaviors displayed by Design will make way more sense and more of her explanations in what was going on with Yumi and Painter won’t seem like crazy talk.

I really loved this story. Such an interesting concept and characters. The narrator took me out of the story a bit, especially as the end. I wish Sanderson had used another way to get the information across to the reader.

Painter lives in a world shrouded in darkness lit by neon light, and is doing the one thing he has always wanted to do. He paints nightmares keeping his world safe from the things that emerge from the dark. Yumi lives in a world lit by a blazing sun, and is doing what she was called to do. After being blessed by the spirits at birth, she now follows the rituals and creates art to please the spirits. But when those spirits ask for help, Yumi finds her life entangled with Painter’s, and they must learn from each other to figure out what the spirits want. But what will happen to them afterwards?
This was a cute YA romance set in Sanderson’s Cosmere. It drags a bit in the first half as it’s mostly focused on the characters and their relationship, but once it explains what is really going on in their worlds, it gets more engaging. But, it’s really dependent on knowing Sanderson’s Cosmere to get everything that’s going on. It was fine, but I was hoping for more.
