Something to keep in mind about this book before I go any further. At the time of this review, this book is available through Kindle Unlimited subscription to read and listen to for free. This is how I chose to read/listen to this book.

I've read many urban fantasy books -- it's my favorite genre -- and will be the first to admit that it's pretty rare for an author to continuously outdo the prior book. Steve McHugh is one such author. This book replaced Prison of Hope as my favorite in the series thus far.

There's just something about Nate that draws you in. He's cocky as all hell. In fact, he's been rewarded with a punch to the face or knee to the groin on several occasions, through many books, due to his smug remarks in poorly timed situations. Despite his nonstop arrogance, he's fiercely loyal to those he considers friends. He's relentless on doing what's right. It may not be the *the* right thing, but it's his idea of what's right and he won't finish until he sees it through. He's been around long enough and is stubborn enough to get shit done, no matter what it takes, even if there's often times a hefty cost attached.

He was kept very busy in this book. Actually, I'm surprised the amount and frequency of magic he was tossing around throughout the book that we didn't see more of his nightmare, Erburus. Nevertheless, this book was exceedingly entertaining and evoked an array of emotions as I listened/read it. The gentleman who narrates it, James Langton, does a wonderful job of bringing the characters and scenes to life; to a degree that I may research other books he has narrated after completion of the Hellequin Chronicles.

One of the biggest things that I've consistently loved about this series is the fact that the women in it are also bad ass. Not only are they heavily capable, there's several instances to which Nathan Garrett, aka Hellequin, has had his ass saved by a woman.

Overall, much was revealed throughout the course of the book. There were numerous new characters, a plethora of secrets shed, and enemies unmasked. Additionally, a lot of cliffhangers at the end of the book that promise the continuation of an already brilliant story arc.

4.5/5. Some less than stellar flash back chapters and not so great set up chapters held this back from full stars. This was some fantastic revenge and confrontation reading that continued to have great buddy moments and main cast expanding another couple of characters that were very interesting. Plus the Nate is hellequin thing being public is fun, the trope of the secret identify finally be widely known and how it affects the world around him is something I enjoy a lot.

This was a very good adventure, and I'm hesitant to give it anything less than 5 stars. It is more of a 4.5, however, mostly because it is the setup book for the finale of the series. Two more books for this story line, and certainly this is going to be an important step in the plot, but I don't see it standing as well if read out of context from the rest. Otherwise, a great build-up into what is coming.

I did enjoy this but I find the flashbacks frustrating, it just didn't feel like the past, other than a reference to a carriage there's not much to differentiate victorian London from modern London and it just didn't feel that authentic.

4,75 stars for this one!
I once again dis love it - the characters have definitely grown on me a lot! I wish I wouldn't have to part...

1/4 star is missing for some fight scenes that have felt a little too drawn out for me - while so far I loved them, here they went on so long I got a bit bored in the end. As action scenes are supposed to be the most exciting parts (at least for me), I found that a bit sad. It was only a few scenes, and it wasn't overly much more than I would have found perfect, so I'm definitely nearer the 5* than the 4*.

Also I missed some of the major, important new characters (especially one) introduced in book four. I am still wondering how things are looking in their lives...

Otherwise once again a really great, entertaining, action packed and fast paced adventure with characters I adore!
