The MC is vapid and just got a good character. It’s giving Tell Me Lies vibes and I absolutely hated that book. Handles anorexia unfavorably (what’s with authors having a character needing to starve to extreme lengths), there’s a whole ass gang rape scene that made me want to chuck the book especially after the planned parenthood trip and the gay comment. How is this book popular! Like I had a hard time wanting to continue on with it because of how terrible the plot actually is from the premise I was promised.

I did not like this book at all. It’s engaging enough which is why I finished it, but I kept waiting to a redeeming quality and it just never came. Ani is wholly unlikable: she’s vapid and shallow, self conscious and fat phobic, judgmental and rude… and she never grows past those traits. I even felt the ending lacked the punch it needed to redeem her.

I think books about sexual assault and gun violence are important, when they’re done well. This book feels amateurish and superficial. No one has any depth; every character is one dimensional except maybe Mr. Larsen.

Do not recommend. I’m surprised it was popular enough to warrant a movie/show about it… I have no intention of watching it.

CW: sexual assault, gun violence, fat phobia and self loathing

Not something I'd typically pick up. Surprising storyline. The main character is insufferable for most of the book but I think it makes sense and ties the story together, making the her choices all the more impactful. A fascinating read, but sometimes unnerving in a not so good way.
