Fever dream, the kind you wake up from not remembering a thing that happened but vividly how it felt.
Parts felt fetishistic esp depiction of the young girls bodies (nudity and exaggeration of certain features) and the girls kissing, their relationship did not feel developed or natural, reveal of the prince at the end was also weird. Cool vibes though

This is an eerie story that starts in one realm and quickly descends into a dark, dreamlike space. The art is strange— faces a little too childlike, noses and cheeks a little too red, but it grew on me and started to work in the context of this book.
Feels like a Shaun Tan story with shades of Lovecraft and the optimistic agency of Seanan McGuire.

This was a beautifully illustrated story about a girl who finds another girl in the forest as they get closer and find out more about each other. I didn't know anything about this graphic novel going in and it was a wonderful surprise to find out exactly what was going on, even if it was quite strange at times.
The characters were endearing and it was especially exciting when the story turned creepy! The illustrations really evoked the atmosphere of darkness, the unknown, and certain shocking moments that were very effective.
I'd highly recommend this graphic novel purely because of the art and, if you enjoy strange horror stories, then this is definitely for you.

The illustrations in this short volume are really a stand out. What initially attracted me to the book was that the art was heavily reminiscent of Jonathan Weiner's gorgeous cover illustration for Kai Meyer's book The Water Mirror.
This storytelling was surreal and dreamlike, creepy and atmospheric. But there were points where the plot could get a bit convoluted and difficult to understand. While I loved the art, I could have done with more back story.
Watersnakes tells the story of dark-haired Mila, who befriends the beautiful and mysterious pale-haired Agnes. I don't want to give too much away, so we'll say Agnes is not exactly what she seems.
I loved the girl love, but could have done without some of the body horror. Overall, I would give the artwork five stars and the story two or three stars. I really look forward to seeing more illustrations from this artist.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book!

Watersnakes has such an interesting premise. For me, the story had moments where that potential really came through, but overall, I think it just missed the mark. That being said, the artwork is amazing, and it's worth picking up for that alone.

I don’t know what the heck really happened in this book! I don’t think, you are supposed to make sense of the story. It’s like a bizarre dream which is downright creepy. But funnily enough, I still enjoyed it. Go figure!
