I did enjoy the areas of Science-ish where we did some delving into the actual science. It was interesting but digestible without the need for a science degree or A-levels. It also managed to span a lot of areas by disecting films across the sci-fi spectrum from Alien to Gattaca to Back to the Future.
Having said that, I found the text exchanges which I think were supposed to add some light comedy to be more cringe than anything else. I also enjoyed the extra information added in boxes and diagrams throughout but because they would sit in the middle of connected paragraphs rather than at the beginning or end of sections (this space taken up by the afformentioned texts) you had to come back to them later or risk getting confused when you returned to the main body of the text.

This book was definitely interesting, but could use some improvements. I rate it a 3/5.
Firstly, there’s the texts between the writers. I see how they think it’d add comedic value, but honestly it doesn’t add anything.
Then there’s the text boxes in every chapter, which add additional information or fun facts about subjects. Those are definitely interesting but the problem is with the placement of them. They’re often in the middle of paragraphs or even sentences so then you either have to stop reading what you were reading, or come back to the textbox. It’s just not very convenient.
Lastly, some chapters were more interesting than others. The interstellar chapter nearly put me to sleep!
Overall I did really enjoy the book and if you’d ask me if I’d read a follow-up? Yes. Yes I would.

I loved this book!! The content is very interesting. I particularly liked that it divides each movie into separate paragraphs and covers a lot of movies so there is likely to be movies you've seen or enjoyed detailed in there. It does go very in depth into what is fictional and what is present day science but in layman's terms so anyone can understand the complex concepts. Everything from black holes to dinosaur reanimation to artificial intelligence and even pandemics (which hits differently when you're currently living in one). I would describe the chapters as 'meaty' they definitely give you enough content to stick your teeth into. I was particularly excited that they covered Alien, 28 Days Later and The Matrix.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes movies and the sci-fi genre and wants to get stuck in.

An entertaining look at how sci-fi movie makers use, exaggerate and extrapolate science for the sake of entertainment. It was amusing, but also well written and managed to explain some complex concepts well. Also had an excellent and detailed index at the back.
