This was a short story set in the world of Mar Turner's Chronicles of the Exiles books. I haven't read any of those books, in fact this is the first thing I read by Turner, so I can't really say how it connects to the rest of the story arc. I only read this to get an idea of Turner's style and I was quite satisfied.
The characters in this one are not overly detailed or developed but this is something that can be expected a work of such a short length. The plot was mediocre, nothing new, novel or overly exciting. It lacked real reasoning, background and credibility. It also bordered on the cliched at moments. The writing was fluid and well-crafted (no complains there) and maybe that's what matters in such a sampler. And ultimately, just because of that, I'm tempted to try Turner's first novel in this series, "When the Heavens Fall".

Earlier this year I read the debut and first book in a new fantasy series by Marc Turner. It was only after I almost finished the book that I realized how much I'd come to like it. You can find my thoughts and review here: http://urlphantomhive.booklikes.com/post/1190193/when-the-heavens-fall .
Together with the book was released this short story set in the same universe. I decided to wait some time to read it so as to make the waiting between the first and second book a bit shorter. Since it's now about halfway between the books, it was a good moment.

I really liked this short story. It felt good to be back in that universe and now I'm really looking forward to the next book, which is unfortunately, still four months away. I think this might be one of those fantasy series that I'll be following for the next years.
