I’m not super eager to read the third installment in this series. It is a nice, no alcohol/drugs/sex mystery and will appeal to Tween girls in addition to teens. But there isn’t enough meat here to appeal to those with more sophisticated tastes. And, frankly, I’m already sick of the cat-and-mouse game Mary and James are playing with each other. Just get together already and move onto solving mysteries!

Loved it! Loved the development in the relationship between James and Mary. Loved the mystery with its construction in Victorian London ...

This series is getting better. The mystery was not as good as the first one, and I would have preferred more uncovering of Mary's background, but the writing was much better. And the love interest!

Mary Quinn is back and ready for her next assignment. This new assignment hits a little too close to home as it requires her to dress and act as a boy, which is something she did in her former life. In her disguise she joins workers at a construction site to determine how a man fell to his death the previous week. Her more recent past is back to haunt her, James is on the site as well.

Mary's matured a bit since being taken in off the streets, though she still struggles with reconciling her past and present lives and continues to deny her heritage. She becomes quite chummy with James again, and I'm a bit surprised for that time period that she allows it. While the mystery is resolved satisfactorily, her relationship with James seems to take a giant step backwards at the end. Nothing the third novel can't fix I imagine.
