I'd give this book a better rating if the villain wasn't so childish. Really, it ruins her whole vibe, which could have been so good if the authors had just given her a solid motive, a why. At this point, I doubt that's going to happen. Even if it did, the impact wouldn't be as great, because it's too late in the series.

However, finally, I was happy to see some character development in Zoey & Co.'s group. It's about time some people in their circle had true and lasting change . . . as long as they don't backpedal (again) in the next couple books.

I was also happy to see at least one of these authors has improved their descriptive writing. This alone raised the quality of the book, even if the dialogue is still incredibly cringe-y or off-putting sometimes. I've seen it referred to as "teen speak," and I'm inclined to agree, even if no teen I've ever heard has sounded like these guys do. (And I'm from Oklahoma; I'd know.)

But, as usual, there's clichés without the addition of a twist to make it unique. This just leads to boring, predictable, and forgettable conclusions to problems.

At this point, I'm ready for the series to end. These books are clearly being unnecessarily dragged out, and it shows, even if this particular book had a pretty solid medium pace. I'm battling a serious case of sunk cost fallacy.

Look, I've been trying my damnest to like this series but holy shit this one shit this one takes the cake for being goddamn atrocious. I have one sentence for my non spoiler review: Fuck this book and this stupid fucking series!!!

If you care about spoilers...don't be.
This whole series has handled the subject of rape and abuse terribly but I was able to mostly chalk it up to shitty writing or it was so absurd that it didn't make it too bad but showing Neferet's child body in the mirror freshly beaten and raped by her own dad is just...goddamn awful. And the fact that this is the villian, if the writing was better I could forgive it and call it a good story arc for a villain, or even a morally grey character but the writing just isn't there at all! And in complete honesty, I think that the two writers for this series might genuinely not have a problem with rape and think men should be excused for it just because of the themes they show in this stupid ass series. Btw that's a complete theory coming from the writing of this series, I don't know them personally and so can't say anything else on that subject.

Another whole dumbass plot convenience is Kalona becoming good which is dumb as hell, the stupid spell that comes pretty much out of the writers' asses bc they realized they wrote themselves in a corner, AND Heath coming back which just...yeah I guess no one important can die in this shitty ass series!

I'm so tired of this series. They had a good enough spot to end the series here but wanted to stretch it on for even longer. The writing used to be fun, the scenes used to be funny, now it's only boring and when not, infuriating.
