Ted and Betsy Lewin do a lovely job of integrating pretty jarringly different illustration styles into one cohesive book. This title is about a summer festival in the relatively obscure country of Mongolia. The Lewins give a page of background about the country, and then launch into a narrative about their trip to witness the horse races of Naadam. Along the way, lush realistic watercolors depict the larger scenes, while more comic illustrations are sketched in pen and watercolor. At the end, the Lewins include facts about gers (Mongolian dwellings), Mongolian culture, as well as a glossary. The glossary does present one complaint, in that it includes words both in Mongolian and in English, with no indication of which language is being used for each word. However, overall this title does a nice job of introducing Mongolian culture and telling an interesting story.

Picture book, which I knew that when I put it on hold, but totally forgot by the time it came in. :) Cute art, good visual inspiration for fantasy project I'm working on.

Ted and Betsy Lewin bring readers along for the ride on their trip to Mongolia to watch the horse races of Naadam, a cultural festival in Mongolia. Child riders race half-wild horses across the desert sands in this annual celebration that brings isolated Mongolian nomads together to celebrate their heritage.

The illustrations are phenomenal. Detailed paintings bring the reader inside family dwellings and into the middle of the races while smaller cartoon-ish drawings lighten the mood. I really enjoyed my journey with the Lewins!
