I thought this book was going to be "here's the monomyth and it's present in everything", but it's more, "a monomyth emerges from all these different stories, but not all of them display it equally", which is a much more valuable persepctive. I learned a lot, both from the myths I knew from before, and from the ones that were novel to me. If anything, this book will inspire you to seek out more mythologies.

Mythology has been interpreted by the modern intellect as a primitive, fumbling effort to explain the world of nature (Frazer); as a production of poetical fantasy from prehistoric times, misunderstood by succeeding age (Müller); as a repository of allegorical instruction, to shape the individual to his group (Durkheim); as a group dream, symptomatic of archetypal urges within the depths of the human psyche (Jung); as the traditional vehicle of man’s profoundest metaphysical insights (Coomaraswamy); and as God’s Revelation to His children (the Church). Mythology is all of these.

Was reading only for the Hero's Journey, not as interested in the Cosmogonic Cycle onwards.

I had to read this book for a college course on Folklore and it was a very interesting read that honestly I think a lot more people should read. Learning the ins and outs of myths and how the stories are all interwoven is very useful and interesting.
I did take off a star because there were big chunks of repetitive information that made some sections very difficult to get through. They felt wordy and unnecessary.

I've been slowly reading this since college. So interesting and yet I find Campbell so difficult to read. I'll get through it one day.

After years of hearing about the hero monomyth in every conceivable context, I decided to read the original Joseph Campbell for myself. For 70+ year-old scholarship, it holds up astoundingly well and reads fairly easily. Besides the actual hero's journey, the epilogue covers the hero's place in modern society, an issue that feels even more relevant in the Marvel age.

My main beef with actually reading this book is that Campbell's stringing together hundreds of myths makes for erratic prose, as he devotes large portions of each section to relating world myths that quickly run together and become overwhelming. Better transitions, not to mention a few summaries, would have created a FAR easier path for readers. Also, while the Freudean interpretation of dreams is interesting from a historical perspective, it does make parts of the book feel like an academic time capsule.
