Down the Drain by Julia Fox

dark emotional funny reflective sad tense fast-paced

Julia has lived such a tumultuous, trauma-filled, and dark life. I was so deeply engrossed in this book, it's definitely fast paced and easy to get through in terms of pure readability, although the content itself is difficult to get through.

While many see Julia as someone who has been put through a lot many ignore her responsibility in many of the things she did and how they contributed to the messiest parts of her life. At some point I expected to put her foot down and stop the revolving door of toxic relationships she has been in her whole life but up until the last chapter she's engaging in actively harmful behavior. It got extremely frustrating at parts, she never seems to fully concede for the messed up things she did throughout her life. Julia just generally seems to lack some level of self-awareness in the book. If you're looking for a book about growth past abuse and addiction this may not be the book for you, if you just want to hear about the life of the ultimate New York party girl this is definitely the book for you.

In terms of the writing, Julia has undeniable skill in storytelling but her actual writing can be choppy at times. Throughout reading this book I watched and read many interviews of Julia Fox, in one with a New York Times reporter she mentions she wrote and edited the whole book herself. This is very apparent when reading. This book should have been revised by a professional editor one or two more times for more coherent readability. One thing that especially contributed to the book being hard to read was the way that Julia brings up people she had known her whole life that she had never previously mentioned (most notably Katherine and Josh Safdie). Other characters weren't described in detail and tended to blur together.

Despite all of this I really enjoyed getting so emersed in the life of a New York party girl. Along with reading this book I also looked through some pages of Julia's two artbooks, her playboy spread, and some of the page six articles she mentioned. It was utterly fascinating, and despite my criticisms with the book I loved it.
