With the caveat that this book is incredibly 2000 and everything that that entails, this was a nostalgic hug to listen to. I have been doing Badly in the ol' noggin lately and this was honestly the only thing able to calm me down. Very grateful to Anne Hathaway for recording these narrations, wish she had done the whole series and not just the first three books.

Entertaining, chatty, teen book. The main character has an engaging personality. Very enjoyable fluff.

Reread 22/10/19
4 stars.
Right, so I thought when I opened this up that I was reading book two, and all throughout i was like what the hell all this seems so familiar is this right, turns out I was rereading book one not 2 but weirdly I enjoyed it much more than the first time I read it? I still thought Mia was a bit questionable, but who isn’t as a teen. I enjoyed the diary format this time, and next time I’ll make sure I’m reading the right book lol

3.5 stars

At first I didn’t really like this, I only really powered through to say I’d read it because I never got to as a teen. I didn’t like the diary style format. I thought it would be a story with diary entries, but the whole thing is told as if we’re reading her diary, complete with lists and maths homework and stuff and in the beginning, it was hella annoying. But somewhere in there, I got used to it. I started enjoying the book, hell the last quarter I really loved, so my rating slowly went from a 1.5-2 to averaging at a 3.5 because by the end I was like all these last scenes were at a 4.5-5 I was all for the drama.

My main issue ended up being Mia. She’s what most people would call a typical teen. She complains. A lot. She’s extra 99.98% of the time and she really just doesn’t care. She’s not all that bright, she’s not a ‘pretty’ girl but vain enough to want to be one, she’s delusional about the hottest guy in school being sweet and sensitive. She’s clueless that her best friends brothers in love with her (EVEN AFTER THAT SONG AT THE END ARE YOU KIDDING ME GIRL) and shes really just finding her way in life. Did she find it in this book? No. But she’s 14 and her life is just beginning. It was a pretty good start to a series in that retrospect, but the way it was presented to me had me not wanting to continue the series for a large majority of this book. Because I finished it and was happy, I AM going to try one more.

Also, I could have been against it because still to this day, Princess Diaries is one of my favourite movies. I had issues with her grandmother not being like Julie Andrews and her dad being alive and a douche. In fact everyone was a bit of a douche in this. I like how in the movie we see the royals relax and Mia polish up, and I like that they GIVE HER A CHOICE. All through this they were like nah girl fuck your choices you gotta do it. Maybe raise her to be prepared for it then? It was stupid. And her mothers way more irresponsible and doesn’t come across as a great parent - her dad is even worse - and I WANT JOE. I was so disappointed in not having Joe as security, I still can’t get over it. Lilly was very similar in both, Mia looks different and doesn’t quite have the same issues as the movie, and I really wish the movie added more of the school life and her new friend because that chick could have helped her feel less weird.

I missed the humour and fun vibes the movie had. This was definitely more of a teen drama than anything. Still prefer the movie over the book. Did like that that stupid beach scene wasn’t in the book or the damn foot popping thing. Also liked how diverse this book was oddly enough. And Mia is a vegetarian and it really annoyed me when her dad and grandma kept trying to get her to eat meat and told her she’d have to as a princess. Seriously. People suck.
