✨ Review ✨ After Hours on Milagro Street by Angelina M. Lopez
In the main plot, Alex (Alejandra) Torres, a big shot, bad bitch bartender from Chicago, blows into town to save her grandmother's bar. She quite literally bangs into Jeremiah Post, a local professor who's renting a room above the bar. Alex quickly learns that Jeremiah wants to turn the bar into a museum about the local Mexican American population that has for decades lived on Milagro Street, the barrio in their town. There's a super steamy romance here between Alex and Jeremiah that persists throughout.
There's a lot going on in this book, so I'll try to summarize some of the subthreads here:
⭕️ there are ghosts haunting the bar and some light magical realism running throughout
⭕️ there's great history about the traqueros, Mexican American railroad workers that came to settle in the Midwest -- it definitely peaked my historian interest
⭕️ there are great discussions about historic preservation, community, stakeholders and appropriation throughout this book (my historian heart was again cheering for this)
⭕️ there's a mystery at play as Jeremiah and Alex team up to search for hidden documents, uncovering secrets about the town and its founders
I liked this book and many of its threads though it was a bit overwhelming in length and all of the pieces happening within. It's definitely a romance worth reading if you want to juggle interesting subplots throughout!

alex torres has finally returned home. she is back in kansas to turn her grandmother's bar into a thriving business and resurrect her bartending career while doing it; however, jeremiah post is standing in her way. the professor is staying in a tenant space above the bar and has her whole family wrapped around his finger. the problem is, he wants to turn the bar into museum. jeremiah doesn't think alex has the bar's, her family's, or the community's best interest in mind. the mild mannered professor is willing to stand up to the gorgeous spitfire of a woman whom he now shares a wall with despite the instant attraction they both share. alex and jeremiah must come together when an even bigger enemy threatens the home that they both desperately need.
YALL!!!! YALL!!!! this freaking book!!! i cried, i sobbed, i laughed, i sobbed some more, and i loved. this was such a beautifully well done small town romance. the romance between alex and jeremiah was next level to me and getting to see them go from these two that couldn't stand to be in the same room as each other (even though the tension was through the roof) to being each others biggest supporters was amazing!! i loved the plot and milagro street coming together to share the history that was stolen/hidden from mexican-americans in kansas and throughout the great plains. i don't think there are words that can capture how deeply i love this book. pls pls pls pick it up. i won't shut up about this for the rest of my life!!!

So in love with these Characters and family. I can’t wait to read more. Ending felt a bit abrupt. But I think the story will continue in the next book.
