As someone that reads a hell of a lot of fantasy books, I appreciate this series. It's an honest fantasy story, with interesting characters and a setting that keeps getting complicated. The kind of story told here can only be told in serialized media, which is why it doesn't explains everything immediately and actually takes its time setting up character relationships and societal dynamics. I enjoy that, and I also see how it's not everyone's cup of tea.

This is, however, very much a middle book. Like the first movements in a symphony, it shows you a glimpse of what's coming, but doesn't makes anything clear, you have to be patient and see where it's going. If you're invested in the books, that shouldn't be a problem. If, however, all you're looking for is some harmless fun, then you'll be disappointed.

In this volume we get less humorous shenanigans, but in its place there is much more character development, backstory and a hell of a lot of tentacles. So I stand with team liked it. If you, like me, have decided to give Kurtis Wiebe and Stjepan Šejić (oh gods his art!) a chance to tell their story, then you'll enjoy it too.

This may have just replaced Saga as my favorite graphic novel series.

Review on my blog, The Fictional Reader

As I said, when I finished volume 1, I immediately wanted to read volume 2. So I did.

What I enjoyed most about this volume, is that we got a lot more backstory on each of the characters. We can see each Rat Queen before they actually became a Rat Queen, and why they left their lives somewhere else. It also shows some background dynamics between certain characters who have known each other for a long time. For example, Hannah and Darius. From the first volume, you can see that they have a history. But you never see what happened, or how it played out. This volume, while being action-packed and fun, still gave us insights in each of the women.
