My second Alex North read - preferred The Angelmaker, but still enjoyed this one.

What an absolutely AMAZING book. Holy crap. The storylines were so intriguing I found it hard to put it down. Full of murder, gore, and a horrifying sense of dread, The Shadows was a fast read.

This story was too long. But. I liked the way the author wrote. I enjoyed the language, the british-ness of it. Lucid dreams, haunting nightmares, cycles of murders of boys in a small town.

"Perhaps life was just a matter of doing what you thought was best at the time and then living with the consequences as best you could afterward."
I think this quote sums up well the story of Paul and his childhood nightmares being replayed into adulthood. It was an interesting premise, plenty of action to keep me entertained, but there were some parts that just fell short for me.
I found myself getting caught up on North's language and having to re-read sections because I got confused as to whose point of view I was reading. The story simmered towards the end but I thought it wrapped up really nicely.
I am interested to read the Whisper Man and see if I have better luck with his books.
