This was fine. It was interesting, and great care is taken towards making it feel like a diverse cast, but two things:
1. Because the cast was so refreshingly diverse, I couldn't help but notice no people of color happened to draw others to them in an alpha way like Luke, Riley, and the other girl with an L name and pasty white skin did. Mama N was Mama C's wife, but she wasn't an alpha. Mama C was, also pasty white.
2. This honest to god feels like a middle grade gateway drug into werewolf omegaverse fiction. It's literally just missing the fates mates, and even then it had a little bit of that with the "prime pack inside the larger pack" dynamics.

This was a really great middle grade spooky book. Natalie really captured the new big feelings and how 12 year olds try to process them.

I’m not too sure how to rate this!
I enjoyed it and will most likely read future instalments, but I also feel like the story progression was too similar to other MG fantasy books. I’m not sure if there’s a recipe to follow when writing MG books or if it’s a coincidence?
I also think that there could have been a bit more introduction to the characters because there were a lot. I had a bit of a tricky time trying to remember who was who. I can definitely see there being development as the series goes on though!
The epilogue was perfect and I’m really happy that this queer werewolf story exists.

Cute!! The internal narrative of Riley feels super on par for the age and I loved the queer angst even if Riley doesn't know what it means, or maybe especially so. I'm super excited for the next one in this adorable series!
