I absolutely love the world of the Devil's West, so I picked up this anthology as a rainy day comfort read, despite reviews warning that it isn't anything very interesting/unique. Those reviews were completely right- probably the best story in the book is the first one Gilman ever wrote about the Devil's West (and the first in the anthology), while the rest are meandering and not particularly interesting. Gilman is strongest when she describes the landscapes and magic of the Territory, and weakest when she is reflective. Unfortunately, much of this book is reflective. Nonetheless, I don't regret picking it up, enjoying the landscape scenes that WERE there, and living back in the world of the Devil's West for a few evenings!
