A really fun time that gets a bit tiresome by the end.

Took me four tries (descriptions of violence toward children) but I finally read it. And I'm glad. It was, after the first 50 pages or so, laugh out loud funny. I actually care about John and Dave. I do. If you liked John Dies at the End, this is more of that than Spiders.

This is another David Wong what-do-I-do-with-this-review book. I liked What the Hell Did I Just Read, and it annoyed me at the same time.

I love Jason Pargin's take on cosmic horror. It is by turns absurd (which it really should be) and jaw-droppingly horrific (see above). This is a more cohesive novel than John Dies at the End but I didn't like it quite as much as This Book is Full of Spiders. I think it was John's point of view more than anything that grated. I think John is a great character, generally, but he gets to be to much when he runs the show--kind of like Will Farrell or Jack Black in their most iconic roles: over-the-top nonstop low-brow humor and screaming.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy low-brow humor and screaming in moderation. John just does not do moderation. That said, I am looking forward to If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe and will happily read it. I will just need to be in the wrong state of mind to get the most out of it.

Where did I put that Soy Sauce...

You know when you get so into a book that you have no idea how much time has passed and only snap back to reality once you have to pee? It’s like that.
This is the first trilogy in which I have given every single book 5 stars. I have still read nothing like it and enjoy these tales immensely. Every book had me gripped from start to finish, leaving me no choice but to binge read them. They are unique and hilarious and I found myself re-reading paragraphs for fun, hoping it would never end. I am looking forward to reading more of this author’s work, but I don’t know if this series can be beat!

The only thing you can say about David Wong's John Dies at the End series is not what they are about but how we get there in the end. The three narrations of Dave (slacker, just making it up as he goes along and constant amazement on how he got here), Amy (common sense) and John (immature softcore sex film) work brilliantly. It's a chaotic and fun b-move horror and sci-fi mash involving our three heroes.
