enjoyed the journey of watching the main character slowly losing his mind with this dark secret, whilst also trying to blend in with normal, heat-induced teenage behaviours. but, i was waiting for it to be something more. 104 pages felt too short for a concept like this, but i feel like the author might’ve made the story drag if he made it longer with this specific plot. the exploration of sexuality and guilt was very intriguing though. glad i read it but unsure if i would recommend it.

update: thank you storygraph bc 2 stars felt too low but 3 stars was too much for this book

2.5

I found this book to be a fast-paced narrative that delved, repetitively, into the psychological struggles of a teenage boy. It was an interesting and, at times, a very captivating novel exploring teenage coming-of-age wrapped in the mental exhaustion of keeping a horrific secret. 3 stars is a fair rate to give this book for its average portrayal of a compelling story. It’s use of recurring motifs (the heat, the fearfulness and sexual attraction) are at first interesting and utilised well, but are used so much that the novel falls into a repetitive and predictable story arc. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the quick read and would recommend it for anyone trying to get out of a reading slump.

my man said ‘i’m gonna kill YOUR ex’

très rapide à lire et tant mieux. j’ai été un peu déçue et eu beaucoup de mal avec le personnage principal qui reste très opaque et difficile à comprendre malgré la narration à la première personne

quietly boiling and unsettling -- and, i guess, rather ironically: the result is quite chilling
definitely among the best-written thrillers i have read in a while ... every page is a surprise
