A REALLY COOL PREMISE BUT LACKLUSTER EXECUTION.
As a reader of Terry's fantasy novels, I thought I knew what to expect. However, I'm not sure if his narrative style works in a modern story.
There was far too much overexplaining instead of showing, which became an irritant and prevented me from getting fully into the story.
The chapters move much too quickly, but also feel like they go on forever.
He also finds a hilarious way of wrapping his own beliefs into the narrative, aka the detective's monologue about the tense position of police today . It felt awkward and out of place and disingenuous, and were much better ways to start dialogue as the plot moved along than to have the character give an unnaturally spoken speech. Aka he had a chance to weave a compelling parable of sorts about fighting true evil, but it turned into meh.
Above all, the characters were not very likeable to follow, I put the book down and found I felt more at peace finding another than continuing.
