I appreciate that this novel was concerned with illuminating Janeway’s background, but some of those revelations seemed inconsistent with her pre-established character. It wanted to be so dramatic, but fell flat. I also didn’t like how this subplot was integrated into the other main plot. An intense space adventure was constantly interrupted by Janeway’s detailed memories. It deflated the tension in an irritating way.
