I had previously seen an adaptation of this book in movie format so I wasn't unfamiliar with the storyline, but I did think it a strange one. Having read it now, the strangeness is still there (it's where someone is upset with Catherine and does that shocking thing), and while I really loved how fluent the novel read, the Gothic and satire elements are not familiar enough to me to fully enjoy them. (I read reviews raving over Jane Austen putting in certain lines, how funny they were, how satirical, and I'm like???)
Anyway, it's okay if I didn't pick up everything, I still enjoyed my read and do think this book is a bit better than Persuasion.
3.5 stars
Happy Reading!

I loved this ♡
I think I would have loved it for different reasons had I read it at Catherine's age in the book.
This book is very sweet and funny but also thoughtful and smart. It's easy to get annoyed at the annoying characters. Jane Austen does a really good job, as always, of creating a full cast of interesting characters. Her witty writing and fourth-wall breaks are quite fun.

It's Austen so it's always going to be five stars. This was such a cute listen. I love Emma Thompson as Jane Austen narrating the story, I also love how young our heroine is, at times she is too silly for her own good, and yet our hero easily understands this to be a quirk of age and does not hold it against her.

This was recommended to me as I was trying to choose which Jane Austen book to read next and everyone who knows me assured me I would love it. I confess to 2 things – I adore the 2007 adaptation of Northanger Abbey and I have read a modern retelling of it written by Val McDermid, which I think I gave 3 stars. So, I was already familiar with the plot and the characters, I just hadn’t read the book itself.
Unfortunately, this was a really good example of why I don’t really read that many ‘classic’ novels. I think if I hadn’t already been really familiar with the plot I would have struggled to follow what was going on. The writing is very much of its time – it’s very wordy and very dense to read, and I found a lot of it quite dull. The plot and the characters still charmed me, and I’m glad I stuck with it (especially given it really isn’t a very long book!) but I don’t think I’ll be rereading it at any point.
