Even though I saw the twist coming, I still had a fun time with this book!

Every year, Grace picks a random town in the US to visit for a week just to get away from her busy life in New York. This year, Grace is staying in Wyoming and finds herself renting a room from Calvin--a handsome country man. But there's something about Calvin's house and ranch that seem... off. There's no cell service, one of Calvin's previous renters is missing, and Calvin's friends and family are very off-putting. Grace is starting to wonder if she's going to ever make it out of Wyoming.

You Shouldn't Have Come Here is a twisty mystery/thriller with a dual POV. Having already read The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose, I did kind of see the plot twist coming, but the ride to get there, and the ending itself, was still a lot of fun! The atmosphere of the novel was overall suspenseful and creepy, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I read this as an audiobook and am glad I did so since it kept my attention more than I think the physical book would have.

Wow o wow! This was crazy. Grace is a New Yorker taking a vacation at Calvins Air Bnb in Wyoming. As Grace and Calvin grow closer and things don't add up, Grace and Calvin grow suspicious of the people around them. I absolutely do not want to give anything away but this book has one of my favorite tropes ever in it. A slay! I adore the dual pov and day count as the chapter marker. I think the characterization of the cast of characters and then the subtle destabilizing of said characterization  creates a very unsettling story that twists and turns in new ways. I thought I knew exactly what was happening but I did not. My only issue, other then the horrible pacing and semi cringy writing, is that a couple of things never made sense even with the plot twist. Especially everything with Joe and the animals.

Like Jeneva Roseā€™s other books this one is also a roller coaster, in the best way! Just when you think you know what is going to happen you are pulled/spun/flipped in another direction. This the third book I have read by Jeneva and I canā€™t wait to read the rest of her catalog!

You Shouldnā€™t Have Come Here by Jeneva Rose  šŸ„€ šŸ”ŖšŸ”

This book has cemented Jeneva Rose as one of my favorite authors. You Shouldnā€™t Have Come Here is the second book of hers Iā€™ve read and it was an exhilarating read that kept me hooked from page one! šŸ«£

There was something I particularly loved about this book. At first it read as one of those small town romances where our main female character goes on a getaway and meets the handsome country boy. Everything feels right until it doesnā€™t. You quickly get enveloped in a sinister and dangerous environment that shifts the entire tone of the book. As both a romance and a thriller reader, I found this to be a perfect combination of my favorite genres. šŸ©·šŸ”Ŗ

The ā€œcuteā€ obsession quickly turned into ā€œcreepyā€ obsession. At times, I found myself wanting to root for Calvin and thinking, ā€œOh maybe heā€™s not so bad after allā€. I was gaslighted too, but boy was I wrong about him. About a lot of thingsā€¦ šŸ˜¬šŸ«£

You should have seen my reaction when reading the last pages of this book. My jaw was on the floor. I was grossed out, shocked, and thinking, ā€œWhat in the f*ck!?ā€ šŸ˜Ø I had my theories, but honestly didnā€™t see that level of batshit craziness coming.

Iā€™ve read other reviews where people think the writing is awful and cringe, like how Calvin continuously describes Graceā€™s eyes as ā€œBlue, blue eyesā€.
Maybe Iā€™m reading too much into it, but I feel like that should tell you how weird and creepy his character is. Nobody talks like that. I feel that the author was trying to point out his obsession with Grace by how much he repeated it in his head. (These are just my thoughts and itā€™s okay to have different opinions about books though šŸ‘šŸ½).

Thereā€™s some things I would have liked to know the answer to, like what happened to Charlotte and how much did she know?, or why didnā€™t the police guy found the horrible things inside Calvinā€™s house after being there like four times?! Still, I really enjoyed this book and would consider it a new favorite thriller book of mine. A sequel would be great!

I would recommend this book if you like:
  • romance but make it thriller and creepy
  • the show You on Netflix
  • short books
  • clichĆ© tropes in thrillers: no wifi, car breaks down, isolated locationā€¦ but oh, so many twists!

My Rating: āļøāļøāļøāļø (4.5/5)
Spice Level: šŸŒ¶ļøšŸŒ¶ļø (2/5)

Truly one of the dumbest books I've read in a while. The writing was so bad, and the story was somehow even worse.

Almost immediately, I kept saying, "you've only known him/her for x amount of days!!" Things were so ridiculous in how quickly they moved with the characters, and yet still, nothing was happening! And seriously, that ending? THAT was the twist? It just had me rolling my eyes.

The only reason I even finished the book was because I rented it from the library on audiobook during a long drive and needed something to listen to.

Oh, and if I had to hear "her blue blue eyes" ONE MORE TIME!!!!! (Stay tuned for the total number count after I get the digital copy from libby and can search for the amount of times it was said)

This book was cringey and some of the lines were laughable. Iā€™m someone who tries to see every book through to the end and I wish I hadnā€™t. The twist at the end was laughable and I wish I hadnā€™t spent my money buying the book.
